Tap your retirement assets the easy way. Sign up for our free Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) Service and we'll calculate the amount you need to withdraw and distribute your assets the way you want.
Once you reach age 70½, the IRS requires you to withdraw at least a minimum amount each year from all your IRAs and retirement plans—except Roth IRAs—and pay ordinary income taxes on the taxable portion of your withdrawal. We can help you with this annual chore by calculating the RMD for your Vanguard accounts.
Help managing your RMD—at no charge. We'll:
Calculate your RMD. We'll automatically calculate your distribution amount each year based on your retirement account balance as of December 31 of the previous year. You can review the details online or over the phone. We'll notify you by mail of the amount you must distribute by year-end. RMDs for Inherited IRAs are available by request.
Distribute your RMD, if you wish. We can automatically transfer your money to a Vanguard nonretirement account, deposit it at your bank, or send you a check.
Keep you posted. You'll receive statements by mail; track your progress online at any time.
Want to use your RMD to make a charitable donation?
You can satisfy your RMD requirement if you use your distribution to make a charitable donation. For tax year 2013, you can make a tax-free distribution to charity of up to $100,000 per taxpayer.
Use our free RMD Service if you:
Are 70½ or older. You may pre-enroll as early as age 69½.
Own a traditional IRA, SEP-IRA, SIMPLE IRA, or rollover IRA.
Inherited an IRA (including a Roth IRA) at any age. You must be the sole primary beneficiary and take RMDs over your lifetime.
Are a retired participant of an employer-sponsored plan of which Vanguard is the custodian, except 401(k)s. Enroll online for RMD calculation only. Request distributions separately.
It takes just a few minutes to set up your free RMD service. Before you begin, you'll need to decide whether you'd like us to reinvest your RMD assets at Vanguard or deposit them at your bank. If you're age 69½ or older, sign up now»
