How's the economy doing? GDP can give the answer

How do you know if the U.S. economy is healthy?

The broadest economic barometer to answer that question comes from gross domestic product, or GDP. It essentially measures the amount of economic activity across a nation.

U.S. GDP is estimated every quarter by the Commerce Department. Economists examine the rate of change in GDP to assess the health of the economy. GDP typically grows at varying rates, but it periodically shrinks during recessions.
